( 30 x 48 oil painting • 1992-2011 )
This canvas started life as a lone rider surrounded by desert. During my western loop of the U.S. in 2007, however, I discovered the Snake River in Idaho, ideal background for Westerns. In 2009, a friend (part Cherokee as I am), pastured his paint mare and foal nearby. After a photo shoot, this college music director replaced the lonely rider. With the addition of the old half-Cherokee woman in the background (my great grandmother Emma), and historic photos of Indian camps, the final image became my own story.
