My grandmother Ethel came to Oklahoma in a covered wagon and lived in a half dugout like the one depicted. These women civilized America in the latter 1800’s and early 1900’s. They played music and sang at weddings, and became the pillars of whatever community they graced. Story telling, quilting, gossiping with humor, staring into the face of hardship and poverty, these western women tenaciously held on to their dreams. Many died of overwork and childbirth without ever realizing them. Our accomplishments are carried on their shoulders.
